Week 13 Biochemistry - The Body's Ecosystem
NOVA Food Classifications
It turns out my eating habits fluctuate and although I try to eat healthy, I find there are plenty of processed foods that enter my GI tract. A lot of that category are from enriched AP flour from breads or baked goods. It usually occurs because I haven't cooked from scratch and that's usually because I don't have time. And I happen to like snacks a lot... highly palatable indeed. And cheese.
“Researchers have identified some 700 microbial species that inhabit the human mouth”
That's probably good for us and our gut! Apparently we have more bacteria in our gut than we do cells in our bodies. There's also another theory that we are actually organisms that are keeping bacteria alive, that their evolution is proliferating through us and that we are just vectors that are feeding into their existence. Or something like that.
The discussions this week were pretty interesting with CRSPR and gene-edited babies. On the one hand, gene-editing is a pretty scary concept to me, and the idea of altering the genetic makeup of an unborn baby is so bizarre. On the other hand, it would be very interesting and exciting to see how far we can take science in regards to CRSPR and people with diseases such as sickle-cell disease. CRSPR in the name of research! People who wish to choose and select specific genes for their unborn babies is a reflection of society for me. People choose and select their pets based off of breed, looks, and preferred qualities, and it's carried over to their unborn children's eye color, skin color. Seems as if people are so absorbed in the superficial and how the things they take ownership of look. My other thought as we were reading through CRSPR and all that could go wrong with it was the perspective of the Earth. Humans are responsible for the degradation of the environment, the planet. We are a disease to the Earth and perhaps diseases and human deaths are just a rebalancing of the yin and yang of earth (along with natural disasters).
